Earthquake Philippines 2013 – The Morning the Bed was Rocking

Earthquake Philippines October 2013,Philippines earthquake about 8:15am I awoke to what I thought was someone violently shaking the bed. Being sound asleep, by the time I realised what was going on and started to make moves to get outside the quake slowed.

I since found out that it was a magnitude 7.2 Earthquake centered in Bohol Island about 100km away as the crow flies. What seems like a continual flow of aftershocks have occurred over the following 2-3 days. It is a very strange feeling, something I’m not used to.

This is not the first earthquake Philippines has encountered.

Not the First Earthquake Philippines has Encountered.

Although Philippines Earthquakethis was a major event it is not the first earthquake Philippines has encountered and I dare say it won’t be the last. The Philippine archipelago is located in the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where earthquakes and volcanic activity are quite common.

The damage is widespread through both Bohol and Cebu the neighboring Island.

Earthquake Philippines map

Earthquake Philippines listAs you can see in the map available from the largest magnitude (7.2) was the first one, but several of the aftershocks are big earthquakes in their own right.

Basilica Del Santa NinoThe damage is widespread, the most notable is the Basilica Santa Nino – 16th Century Roman Catholic Church in Cebu City, held sacred by the locals.  I’m sure heritage restoration crews will be deployed as soon as the aftermath of the earthquakes has subsided.  I recently wrote a post on things to do in Cebu where this church was featured as a must see.

Reports say there have been over 100 deaths and many more injuries and several million people have been directly effected.  Our hearts and prayers go out to all these families.
