Mindanao – The Troubled Southern Region of The Philippines

Mindanao is the second largest Island in The Philippines and is also the name of the Southern most region of The Philippines.  Davao is it’s capital and arguably the second or third largest city I believe it takes a close Mindanaothird to Cebu City, but who really knows lol.   The total population of Mindanao is around 22 million people of which about 10% are Muslim.

Mindanao is the only area in The Philippines that has a Muslim presence, widespread poverty and religious differences has caused a separatist movement between Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF)  (For those Westerners Milf  has another meaning.. Funny … But these guys are extreme) and the Philippines Forces.

A quote from the safetraveller guide – an Australian Government website.

Current Advice Level: “High degree of caution”
Change Summary:
It contains new information in the Summary and under Safety and security: Terrorism (on 29 May 2013, the US Embassy in Manila issued a message to warn its citizens in the Philippines of a credible kidnap threat against foreigners in Zamboanga in Mindanao). We continue to strongly advise you not to travel to central and western Mindanao, including the Zamboanga Peninsula and Sulu Archipelago, due to the very high threat of terrorist attack, kidnapping, violent crime and violent clashes between armed groups.  We continue to advise you to reconsider your need to travel to eastern Mindanao.

Cut and Paste straight from the email.  So unless you have some extremely compelling reason to go to those regions, personally I would steer clear.   I would at some point travel to one or all of the major Mindanao cities if I had Filipino friends with me in a group.  Davao, Cagayan De Oro or General Santos.   But seriously I am 6′ tall with blonde hair and blue eyes, I kind of stand out, I’d rather not put myself in harms way – There are so many places, just as beautiful in the Philippines to see and experience, might as well do it safely.  Sorry.

Mindanao ‘s economy is mainly agriculture, many citys claim being the capital of “mango” or the “banana” capital of……  I hear also about rolling 12 hour brown outs due to an insufficient power supply.  Being hot and muggy all the time there, might get a bit uncomfortable without an air conditioner.  The cities should be fine, but i suspect they are not immune to it.

Mindanao – Davao Third Largest City in The Philippines

DavaoDavao City and the surrounding region is the hub for trade, industry and commerce on the Island.  Mount Apo, the tallest mountain in the Philippines is in Davao.
